RALPH ALLEN

to May 20, 2018

The Fine Arts Center Presents:

Ralph Allen belongs to a cohort of Haitian artists who began their artistic life outside of Haiti. Allen followed his family into exile during the oppressive Duvalier regime and learned to paint in New York City. Consequently, his work does not follow the formal conventional traditions of Haitian art. His themes, however, remain Haitian, and his large murals are suffused with Haitian street life.

Allen’s mural Envoutement captures the vibrancy of Haitian music and dance, which are always present in Haitian cultural activities. Through vigorous brushstrokes and vivid colors, Envoutement communicates the energy of Haitian music.

Envoutement was created as part of the exhibition The Art of Haiti: Loas, History, and Memory and will remain on view throughout 2018. Assistance was provided by Colorado College student Quang Vu.

With a vivid imagination and a saturated color palette, this video retells a creation story about the time when the gods of heaven separated from the gods of the land.

The Art of Haiti is curated by Dr. Anthony Bogues, Asa Messer Professor of Humanities and Critical Theory; Director, Center for the Study of Slavery & Justice; Professor, Africana Studies at Brown University.

YOSHITOMO SAITO

February 23, 2018 to April 29, 2018

The Fine Arts Center Presents:

Born in Tokyo, Japan but residing in the United States since 1983, Yoshitomo Saito finds inspiration in the minutia of the natural world, drawing out details of the environment surrounding us and elements of everyday experiences that most would miss or take for granted. In 2006, Saito moved to the Rocky Mountain region in search of a new and affordable live/work situation to pursue the lifestyle of a fully engaged independent artist. Utilizing the Italian lost-wax process of bronze casting at his Ironton Studios foundry in the RiNo Art District of Denver, the artist freezes delicate, organic objects in time and assembles them into immersive, meditative, thoughtful and sometimes humorous installations.
